After exiting Word 2003 I receive a message that the global normal template
must be saved. When I go to task manager I find two or more images of winword
running. If I have brought Word 2003 up 3 times and closed it 3 different
times I find 3 images of winword running when I go to task manager. Why
does't the winword image closed after I close Word 2003?

Because you have a fault that's keeping it running while invisible. Either a
corruption, or sloppy code in a macro or add-in.

I suspect you are using Word as your email editor in Outlook and Outlook is
running.
