Default MSWord 2003 Mail merge hyperlinks

I am putting together a mail merge to email, constructing a link in the body
of the message as follows:

http://www.domainname.com/webpage.as...ID=«EventID»

When i perform the mail merge and distsribute, the link does not appear in
outlook2003 messages as a clickable link - i have to ask that users
copy/paste the link in a browser.

is there a reason & workaround to make the link "hot" in the recipient's
message?

thanks!
