Default Changing units of measurement

Having moved from Ireland to the US I'd like to use "Letter" size
instead of A4, and also to see the ruler in inches. Is this a setting
in Word 2002 or in WinXP. I used to be able to do it so easily in
Win98 & Word 97, but now??????

The ruler in Word can be changed by clicking on Tools | Options |
General | Measurement units: Inches | OK. The default paper size
can be changed in Start | Control Panel | Printers | right-click
on your printer | Properties.

Thank you very much. Just one other thing... Having just changed from
Word 97 to 2002 I really don't like the Task pane, there's just not
enough space on a laptop screen. I have turned it off a few times in
Options, but the pesky thing keeps re-appearing. Can I zap it so it
never come back?
