Default Document opens "off-screen" and cannot be viewed

When I open a Word 2003 document, it shows in the task bar, but seems to open
off-screen. Clicking on the task bar does not open the document.

Could someone have been playing about with the buttons on the monitor?

Right-click on the Task Bar button. If the available options include
Minimize and Maximize but not Restore, then the document window is indeed
offscreen. Open any other window, then right-click on an empty area of the
Task Bar and choose Cascade. This should bring the Word window back in view.
Use the mouse to move and size it to your preference (and to set its new
position), then quit Word. When you restart Word, the window should be where
you left it.
