Default Can't undo read-only status.

I opened a shared document while it was in use by another user. I selected
"notify me when file becomes available, but closed the document before it
became available. Now when I open it it is in read only status. I have tried
to change the status in properties, but read-only isn't checked. I've tried
checking and unchecking to no avail...help!
