Default Imported text has square symbols

I imported a txt file into word and the data comes in with square symbols.
I tried doing a find and the symbols are not recognized. I am having to
manuallay delete these and these files are very large. Is there a way that I
can do a find and replace on these symbols?
I turned on the paragrah marks and the squares show as a y with the .. above
the y. I can't seem to find that symbol.
Cany anyone assist me???
