Default 2003: field in text box not saved as expected in web page

I have a diagram with textboxes linked by connectors. The text boxes contain
hyperlinked references to bookmarks in the main text of the document. E.g.
something like this {Ref bookmark1 /h/*mergeformat}

Everything works fine in document format - even in web layout view. However,
when I save the document as a web page the text boxes containing the field
references appear to contain something like this:

Text from bookmark1108D0C9EA79F9BACE118C8200AA004B=
A90B02000000080000000B000=
000510045005600500072006F0063006500730073000000

and they certainly don't work as hyperlinks.

What I am doing wrong?

Is this with a particular document only, or can you reproduce it in a new
document?

No. I have no difficulty reproducing the problem. It only seems to affect
connected text boxes. The HTML surrounds the "code" like this
w:data08whatever/w:data
