Default How do I get rid of extra spaces in footnotes?

I'm trying to edit a paper that my husban has written, and I need to deleted
extra spaces in the footnote section of his paper. When I try I keep getting
a error message "This is not a valid action for endnotes." How can I get
past this?

Have you tried to use backspace instead?
