Default "versions" feature in ms word

(site) library with check-in/check-out type functionallity.
My understanding is that for folks moving to Word 2007 (once it's
released) there should be a tool of some sort to separate the
versions into different files along the lines of the MS Office Binder
'unbind' tool that started in Office XP after MS Binder was
discontinued.

Unfortunately, the 'help' page for the 2007 Versioning feature, using
Sharepoint, is a bit 'slim' at present
