Problems saving MsWord Document.
Hi,
Please could someone help? I have a large MsWord document which is about 19.5mb in size. It has numerous screen prints inserted as it's in the form of a manual. Every time I go to save the document the process just 'hangs' and proceeds no further. When looking in Task Manager it appears that the program has frozen and is 'not responding'. When Autosave is set it takes ages to save any changes and often generates a Dr Watson. What should I do? Does this have anything to do with the Clipboard? Is it possible to 'empty' the Clipboard? Many thanks for your help in advance. Simon... |

Hi Simon
If this were my document, I would do the following. 1. Re-boot the computer, and then open Word, but don't open any other program. 2. Follow the instructions on the following page to copy everything except the last paragraph mark of your document into a new document. How can I recover a corrupt document or template - and why did it become corrupt? http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm You might need to divide this file into 2 or 3 separate files. And, go through Suzanne Barnhill's list of steps to take to prevent files getting too big: 1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options. 2. Preview Pictu Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File | Properties. 3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on close" is not turned on. 4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes): Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on (or that "Final Showing Markup" is displayed). Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes off. 5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should be avoided wherever possible. 6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics. That is, when you insert the graphic, click the arrow beside Insert in the Picture dialog and choose Link to File rather than Insert or Insert and Link. 7. Embedded objects: These are even worse than ordinary graphics saved with the document. If you see an { EMBED } code, the graphic is an OLE object. Unless you need to be able to edit the object in place, unlink it using Ctrl+Shift+F9. 8. File format: Make sure you are saving as a Word document; in some cases ..rtf (Rich Text Format) files are significantly larger than .doc files. Hope this helps. Shauna Kelly.
