Default multilevel headings with different number styles

I am using word 2002 and I want the following:
1 heading 1
1.1 heading 2
1.1.1 heading 3

I heading 1
I.1 heading 2

But I get the following even after inserting a section break and checking
€˜apply from this section onwards box between the two sections:

I heading 1
I.1 heading 2
I.1.1 heading 3

II heading 1
II.1 heading 2

Help
