Default Writing over selected text

when i select text and try to write over it the text doesn't get deleted,
what i type in is just inserted at the front of the text i had selected.
Tried switching overwrite on but no change.

From the Tools menu, select Options and then go to the Edit tab and check
the box in front of "Typing replaces selection".
