Default Why would a template be saving as .dot vs making me save as .doc?

One of our users is trying to save a template and it is saving the template
vs making her save it as a doc. What causes that?

She is opening the template rather than using it (properly) to create a new
document. The template should be saved (as a template) in one of the
templates folders (the users folder or the workgroup folder). Then it is
used by File New.

For more on the different kinds of templates, tabs on the file new dialog,
and locations of templates folders see
