Default SAVED WORD DOCUMENTS HAVE A ~$ IN FRONT OF THEM AND ARE GREYED OU.

Some of my saved word documents have the "tilde" and a dollar sign in front
of them and the saved document name has been altered. When I open them there
is no content. I did figure out that if I rename them to their original name
some will open with correct contents, not all though. Even after doing this
the Word icon is still very light colored, not like it should be. Any help
with this would be appreciated. I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 with
Microsoft Office XP Pro 2002.
Thank you in advance for any help...

Those files are not document files. They are "owner" or "lock"
files--temporary files created when you open a document and deleted when you
close it. See €śDescription of how Word creates temporary files€ť at

Thank you Suzanne for the help. Looking at the link you posted if I am
reading it correctly. The temporary file that Word creates should be
automatically deleted after Word is closed, is this correct? I have may Word
docs in my My Documents folder and only about a dozen of these "temp" files
that never are deleted. So, I should have the original document where Word
is storing my files, and if so, these temp ones that keep hanging around are
safe to delete?

With Word closed, it is safe to delete any temp files that have been
created. They often do get left open when Word crashes.
