Default Word 2007 - Disabling 'Recent Documents' menu and thesaurus questi

Hi,

Please could somebody inform me how I should go about disabling the 'Recent
Documents' menu from the 'File' or Windows logo button in Word 2007?

I want it to disappear entirely, rather than just reducing the number of
files displayed in the list.

Also, is there any way to change the thesaurus from US to UK? And can you
set the thesaurus as the default 'Reference Book'?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Dan,

You can turn off the display of the Recently used files in Word 2007, but it continues to gather a record of the last 50 files and
you can turn that display back on.

The setting is in File(Office Button)=Word Options (or Alt+T,O)
in the "Advanced=Display" section.

For the Beta, there is a UK Encarta English Dictionary, but I don't recall if there is a UK English targeted thesaurus available.
On the 'Review Tab' click 'Research, then Options.

Please use the 2007 tool from the link below to also send your experience and suggestions directly to the MS Office product team.

Default Word 2007 - Disabling 'Recent Documents' menu and thesaurus qu

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply.

I've already figured that you can reduce the number of files displayed in
the 'Recent Documents' menu from the default 9 to 0, but even then, the menu
still appears, taking up unnecessary space. I can't locate any other option
under 'File Word Options Advanced Display' - where you directed me -
that enables you to disable the feature entirely.

Regarding the thesaurus, the only English one available is U.S., so I guess
I'll have to make do with that (at least until the full release). There can't
be that many differences, anyway.

By the way, is this beta just a trial version, or do we get to keep it for
an unlimited amount of time?

Regards,
Dan

I forgot to repeat - can you set the thesaurus as the default 'Reference
Book'? Even if it is only the U.S. version.

Thanks,
Dan

Default Word 2007 - Disabling 'Recent Documents' menu and thesaurus qu

Hi Dan,

On the time issue, the Office 2007 Beta 2 package becomes a large file viewer set come February 2007. Basically it behaves the same
way as Office 2003 trial software that comes to the end of its trial period.

On the File menu sizing, as with much of the Ribbon the 'size' is predetermined. The 'width' used for the Recently Used Files list
is the same space used by the submenus you can choose from items such as Print...|.

The width of the File menu isn't generally customizable.
The choices for 'Word Options' and 'Exit' will basically always appear in the same screen location at the bottom right of the
File[Office Button] dialog.

Unlike prior versions of Office where setting the choice to zero actually deleted file entries, in the new version the 'display'
choice only reduces or increases the number of files displayed.
As Terry pointed out you need a pretty tall monitor or very high resolution to actuall get 50 items to display. The File=open
dialog is a preset dimension, much like the ribbon and has no scroll bars.

On the Thesaurus and other reference tools, I don't recall a specific setting that lets you 'choose' a default. The formatting of
any specific text with a language/locale should bring up the matching language reference tool when it's checked, but when I checked
using 'color' or 'colour' with the language set to French(France) it made the French Thesaurus available but kept the U.S. English
dictionary as primary and didn't bring up the French dictionary, even after the spell check was allowed to change the word to
'coloured'.

Thanks.

About your latter comment, that's probably because you typed an English word
when you had your default dictionary as English as well.

I guess I'll have to make do with the empty files list! Thanks a lot for
your help, Bob.

Default Word 2007 - Disabling 'Recent Documents' menu and thesaurus qu

Hi Dan,

In the Word 2007 Research Pane
(Review=Proofing=Research)

If I set the drop down to show 'Thesauraus English (U.S.)' rather than 'All Reference Books', it doesn't 'stick' consistently
(unlike Word 2003 task panes don't stay open when you start another new document, in the new document).

It doesn't appear to be entirely a template setting but it may have a registry setting to use rather than the need to rely on a
macro to set that choice. I haven't been able to spend much time on this the past week.
