Default WORDPERFECT, WHY?

You have WordPerfect because Corel Office was a lot cheaper for the computer
vendor to install than Microsoft Office, and the vendor was gambling that
you wouldn't know the difference. Word and WordPerfect are very different.
If you're used to Word and find WP counterintuitive, then you probably want
to go ahead and get Word. The most economical way to do this is as part of
Works Suite. It will be Word 2002 (not 2003, the latest version), but it
will be "good enough," and it comes with five other useful applications, all
for under $100, with a mail-in rebate currently in effect. See

Default WORDPERFECT, WHY?

I won't get into the better/worse conundrum, but the two are definitely
different in many ways. (BTW - WordPad & NotePad are included with the
Windows OS as a part of the Accessories & have nothing to do with the issue
of Word vs WordPerfect.)

If you can work something out with Dell to provide you with Word, that is
one direction to pursue. However, if you have previously purchased the
license for Word & have the source media you can install it yourself on the
new system. Even if it is an older version you should be eligible for
upgrade.

Default WORDPERFECT, WHY?

You have WordPerfect, like Suzanne says, because it is cheaper than Word. If
Word is important to you, then you will have to pay more. Low end systems
have been shipping with WP for about the last three years.

Did you ask your salesperson what software comes preinstalled with the new
system? If you ordered it online, did you read the details about what you
were getting for your money?

Default WORDPERFECT, WHY?

People with Word can read Word Perfect documents if they have a free
converter installed.

Since you are more accustomed to using Word, you may want to consider
getting it. Yes, it means spending at least $70 but are you worth it? (I'm
hoping you're saying to yourself, "Well, *of course* I'm worth that!)

Default WORDPERFECT, WHY?

Another option, in the meantime, would be to give WordPad a try. While it
lacks Word's full capabilities, it does work a whole lot more like Word than
WordPerfect does.

They will be able to read what you send them if you send it in rtf format,
or pdf format. Both are options in WP.

I'm a big fan of the .pdf option if it doesn't need to be edited. And for
free .pdf creating software, I've often recommended PrimoPDF from
www.primopdf.com.
