Default Can't see picture pasted in Word 03 w/out looking @ Prnt Preview

In Office 97 when I pasted a picture in Word, I would see the picture right
away. Since I upgraded to Office 2003, my inserted pictures appear as an
empty box. When I click on them, then I only see the little black boxes that
outline the picture. Occasionally I can get a camera-like icon to appear
near the bottom right of the black boxes. When I click on that, the picture
appears. Also the picture is viewable in Print Preview. This is very
frustrating and tedious. Is there a way to get the picture to view upon
insertion?

Hi Sally,

If you turn off the 'picture placeholder' setting
in Tools=Options=View do your pictures appear
in Print Layout view?

I have the same problem, but the picture placeholder button does not help,
any other ideas?

A few things to try:
1. In Word, if you're working in Normal view, then switch to
Print Layout view (View | Print Layout), because objects that are
formatted as "float over text" (Word 97) or as something other
than "inline with text" (Word 2000, 2002, and 2003) are not
visible in Normal view.
2. In Word, click on Tools | Options | View tab | check the
"Drawings" box and uncheck the "Picture placeholders" box | Print
tab | check the "Drawing objects" box | OK.
3. If neither of the previous suggestions fixes the problem,
then try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start |
Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting.
If this fixes the problem, then you might want to check the
website of the manufacturer of your video card/graphics adapter
to see if there is an updated driver available.

Thank you, I tried all of that, could it be that my driver is too old? I
have a newer one on my motherboard, but it just makes my monitor flash and is
unreadable. I can open the same documents fine on my laptop, but on this
desktop certain types of images just don't appear in documents, specifically
photos and some others.

You seem to be confusing drivers with display adapters. Whichever display
adapter you use, you need to ensure that you have the latest driver software
for it from the adapter / motherboard manufacturer.
