I can change fonts in word documents, no problem, but I'm unable to change
the font when I print labels.

Press Alt + F9 to show the codes (rather than their values). Then, press
Ctrl + H to do a search and replace. Search for ^d REF and leave the
"Replace with" area blank.

Have you selected the label text, right-clicked, and chosen Font?
