Default how do i change a word file to a pdf file

when I try to save a word file as a pdf, the program (Word) hangs. How do I
get this to work properly.

If you're talking about some version of Word for Windows, then you can't
"save as" a .pdf file from Word. You need to install a full version of
Adobe Acrobat (or one of its shareware/freeware clones), and then print
the Word file to the Acrobat PDFWriter printer (or the clone's
equivalent) to create a PDF file.

You need to print to a pdf printer driver. The best is probably Adobe
Acrobat but it is pricey. I use cutepdf. Google for download sites.
