Default Typing symbols appear as i type

Natalie,

Those symbols are your "non-printing characters." If you're using Word 2003,
click the paragraph symbol on the Standard Toolbar (it says "Show/Hide" when
you point to it). If you're using Word 2007, that same button is located on
the Home tab on the Ribbon.

How do I stop seeing the symbols for paragraphs, spaces, return as I type? I
obviously hit a few keys at the same time on the left side of the keyboard,
just can't figure out which ones!
