Typing symbols appear as i type
Natalie,
Those symbols are your "non-printing characters." If you're using Word 2003, click the paragraph symbol on the Standard Toolbar (it says "Show/Hide" when you point to it). If you're using Word 2007, that same button is located on the Home tab on the Ribbon.
