Default creating forms in word

I created a form, but now i am having trouble protecting it. When I protect
it I cannot type into the form fields. Is there some way of selecting the
areas of the form that I want protected and the areas that I do no want
prtotected?
Thanks again!

That's not correct. Form Fields only become Form Fields when the document is
Protected for Forms. Are you sure you have Protects for Forms and not just
applied a general Protect which makes the whole document uneditable.
