Default merge word with an access query with a like criteria

I find that the 2003 version of doesn't read any access query that has 'like'
in the criteria. Has anyone found a way around this?

From the Tools menu, select Options and then on the General tab, check the
box against "Confirm conversions at open". After doing that, when you
connect to the data source, you will be asked for the method by which you
want the connection to be made. Try the DDE option.
