Default Add Comment in footnote?

I'm reviewing a document in Word 2003. It seems that it's not possible to add
a "comment" in a footnote.

Is that correct? Is there any way around this limitation?

Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. You could select the footnote reference mark in the
text and attach a comment to that.

To help your reader, start your comment with "In this footnote" -- but
don't use the footnote number, since it won't change in the Comment
balloon in case the footnote numbering of the document changes.

Actually, there has been a ecuation editor since the very first word edition I believe. In fact, this new editor doesn't seem to be better than the old one (which still comes with office), from what I've seen, its slower.
