Default Why is Word 2003 only opening in the safe mode

Hi Bruce,

Here's a few things you can try to see if you can get Word up and running
properly.

1. Open Word in Safe Mode. Go to Help | About Microsoft Word | Click the
Disabled items button. In the Disabled items dialog box, if anything
appears, click on it and select the Enable button. Once you have enabled all
files, close the dialog box and File | Exit out of Word. Reopen Word and see
if it will open normally.

2. Turn off Word as your email editor in Outlook. If you use Microsoft
Outlook and have Word set as your email editor, then Word doesn't really
close all the way until you close Outlook as well. Word as your email editor
has been shown to cause problems in some environments. So, try turning this
setting off by Opening Outlook and then going to Tools | Options | Mail
Format tab and unchecking the boxes at top for editing and viewing email in
Word. Ok your way out of the dialog boxes and Exit Outlook and Word.
Restart them and see if this helps.

3. Regenerate your Normal.dot: The Normal.dot is the blank template used
to create blank documents in Word. You can force Word to create a new one by
renaming the old one. The location of this template varies for people so it
is easiest to search for the file. It will either be under your profile
(documents and settings\user name\application data\word) or it will be
located in the main template directory which is usually located in C:\Program
files\Microsoft Office\templates. Once you find it, rename the file
OLD_Normal.dot . Then open Word and see if it opens normally. You may need
to exit and then re-enter to allow the program to fully regenerate the new
Normal.dot

I hope one of these items will solve your problem.
