Using XP Home edition, trying to print a document which has page numbers
inserted AND SHOWING ON THE SCREEN, but when the page is printed, instead of
the page number, the text {PAGE} appears where the page number should be.

This is not to do with the page margins, as they have reset to leave plenty
of room for the page numbers. It was thought that the printer - 5 years old -
was doing this,
so I bought a new Canon, and stiil this problem persists.

Any clues as to how it may be fixed ?

Hi Alexandria/Andrew,

Look Under Tools|Options|Print, where you'll find an option to print field codes instead of their values. Uncheck it.
