I am typing my master's thesis in Word 97. After insertion of code excerpts
(with line numbers, always starting as 1) the numbering of the legend also
resets.
How can I bypass this?

The term "legend" is not part of Word; what do you mean by "legend"? And by
"line numbers" do you mean the File/Page Setup/Layout feature, or something
else? If something else, and you don't know the Word term, please tell use the
commmands you used to implement it.
