Default Compatability Problems?

The only way to ensure that your documents appear identical on different
platforms is to send them in PDF format for which you will need third party
software. Otherwise they conform to the issues discussed at

I have been sending my uncle Word documents as attachments via email. I have
XP Office Professional 2002 and he has XP Office 2003. When he gets my
documents and opens them up, they are all messed up, like the formatting has
been stripped. What am I doing wrong here? Are the two program versions
compatible or should I be saving the documents as RTF instead of Word? Any
help would be most appreciated and will keep us from pulling out the rest of
our hair.
