Default ~$ documents

every time I open a Word document, another word document (the same one) is
saved starting with ~$ and then the rest of the name of the file. It is like
it is making duplicate copies every time I open a file. Thanks for your help!

Default ~$ documents

This is normal behavior in Word. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how
Word creates temporary files" for more information. You can stop
Windows from displaying the temporary files by starting Windows
Explorer or My Computer and clicking on Tools | Folder Options |
View tab | select the "Do not show hidden files and folders"
radio button | OK.
