Word requires normal.dot to be in the folder defined at tools options
file locations user templates. If it is not there when Word starts, a new
one is created. When you later close Word you are then given the opportunity
to save the new one Word has created. Word will not run without one or the
other.

Everything is in the right place, Normal.dot is the 'new' page I know & love
but the page that opens has very small top & bottom margins.
When I 'explored' the location of 'norm', (Word closed) there was the usual
~normal as if the file had not shut down correctly. I deleted this and
checked Normal.dot but word still opens the version without top & bottom
margins - frustrating but not the end of the world.

Many thanks for your response.

Double check to make sure you are in Print Preview mode rather than
Normal or Draft Mode. You may also find that you are hiding your white
space. (2003: Tools, Options, View, Place a checkmark in "White space
between pages (Print view only) OR (2007: Office Button, Word Options,
Display, Place a checkmark in "Show white space between pages in Print
Layout view")

If you mean the "white space" issue, it most commonly happens by accident -
clicking the top or bottom edge of a "page" while in Print Layout View
toggles the white space on/off... That's real easy to do when going for the
Ruler or if you are in the habit of randomly clicking in the doc window to
close menus, etc.
