Default How do I control whether Word updates a style that's already been.

Using Word 2003. Help contains the following information regarding "Turn on
or off automatic style definition"
€¢ This option determines whether Microsoft Word defines styles
automatically, but it does not control whether Word updates a style that's
already been defined.

My question is this: How do I "control whether Word updates a style that's
already defined"? The default is that Word will update a style that's already
defined. How do I turn it off please?

Hi Gym-

Go to ToolsOptionsEdit and put a check in the box labeled Prompt to Update
Style (wording may be different in 2003). If you change the formatting of
content that has a style applied & then reapply the style, you will be
prompted as to whether you want to update the style based on the new
formatting or reformat the content based on the style's existing specs.

I'm not sure I totally understand your question, but I think these two pages
will clarify everything:

Word will redefine styles based on changes you make to text formatted in
that style if the "automatically update" box is checked in the Modify style
dialog.
