I have a graphic that I need in my Word97 document but don't want it to print
out. Is there any way to lock or make the graphic non-printing? Any help will
be appreciated.

If it's the only graphic in the document, you can go to Tools Options
Print and uncheck Drawing Objects. Check it again after printing, so you

Thank you for your reply, clicking that button works only sometimes for me. I
was wondering if the graphic needs to be specific file type to work all the
time. I currently have a JPEG in there and it works so well that my type also
doesn't print. I can see this through the print preview. Sorry to be so
bothersome, but my preference is Quark and in this instance my customer is
requesting Word. Thank you again. --Nichole

This area has a few complications, and my advice was for the most
common situation. I'll try to give you the whole story -- but keep in
mind that I don't have Word 97 any more and some things have changed.

There are two kinds of graphics in Word, in-line (which behaves like a
character) and floating. For many purposes, text boxes behave like
floating graphics. You need to be aware of whic kind of graphics you
have in the document, and you need to know when some of the text is in
a text box.

When the Drawing Objects option in Tools Options Print is turned
off, Word won't print floating graphics or anything that's inside text
boxes. It *will* still print in-line graphics and regular text.

This does not depend at all on what kind of file the original graphic
was. Once the picture is inserted into Word (if it's embedded rather
than linked), it's converted into an internal format.

If you aren't having any luck with the print option, you can try
"making the graphic white". Select the picture, and use the controls
on the Picture toolbar to make the brightness as high as possible and
make the contrast as low as possible. After you print, use the Undo
command to restore the picture.

Actually, 100% brightness suffices; you don't have to monkey with the
contrast.

Thank you again, that would explain why all my text boxes disappear too. I'm
taking your second suggestion and the one I figured out by mistake by making
the background graphic white and then printing. I appreciate all your advice
