Default Word 2003 & pre-printed stationary

I have some A5 card that I want to print onto directly from word. The card is
a pre-printed certificate with gaps for name, date etc.

How can I position the text exactly in the word document so that the text
lines up with the gaps on the page? Is it just trial and error or can you do
it more precisely.

I want to use mail merge with the document too.

One method is to scan your certificate and then use that as the
background for your form. Then you can more precisely position your mail
merge fields. Your choice whether to remove the background picture or
not. If you choose to leave the picture in your document, then you will
need to change your print options so that drawing objects are not
printed.
