I'm using Word 2003. Is a docx file s 2007 file type. If so, how do I
read it with Word?

Yes, docx is the new default file format for Word 2007. Similarly,
Excel has a new xlsx format, and PowerPoint has a pptx format.

Download the Compatibility Pack from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...3-C6BB74CD1466
to enable Office 2003 applications to read and edit the new file
formats.

The *x format files are actually zip files that contain the components of
the xml-based file formats. If you're interested in knowing what's under the
hood, so to speak, you can rename a .docx file as .zip, and then you can
look at the innards using Windows Explorer, WinZip, or some other .zip
handler.

There is a windows update or four, including all the security fixes which
should have sorted this for you. It has here, though of course it does have
some dire warnings about only the new version can truly be seen as
compatible, but you can read and edit most files.

In most cases there is really no need for people to use this default file
type in my view, as it screws up so many other people who may not be using
the latest version, or may be using Open Office etc.

I changed it to zip, but the results were some strange folder with a few
xml formats. Opening the xml files led to more mysteries. I think I'll
write the sender and see if he can just get me a pure doc file.

I thought I downloaded this file last night, and installed it, but Word
2003 still seems confused over the docx file.

I guess one of these days, I'll have to pony up several hundred dollars
to get to Office 2007. I'm using Office 2003. Maybe I should ditch 2003
in favor of the student/home version. I really use only Word, Excel,
Publisher and PPt. And then there's the new OS for Oct., which will be a
game changer of some sort. I plan to go there though. My PC desktop is
showing its age.

Make sure you check out "Open Office" before you spend a bunch of money
on another
Microsoft product. It's compatible with about everything, open source
and I think the
World is moving toward it!! Best of all - it's Free!!

It might be free, but has two problems.

1) By comparison it's very slow, even on a fast computer.
2) It doesn't render complex .docx file very well. (Simple ones okay, but
anything with a bit of complexity, no).
