From the Help topic "What do the underlines in my document mean?"
Red or green wavy underlines When you automatically check spelling and grammar, Microsoft Word uses wavy red underlines to indicate possible spelling errors and wavy green underlines to indicate possible grammatical errors. -- Suzanne S. The red lines indicate spelling errors, and the green lines indicate grammar errors. For a full explanation, ask the Help about "wavy lines" and select the topic "What do the underlines in my document mean?" To hide them, right-click the book icon in the status bar (bottom of the window) and click "Hide spelling errors" and "Hide grammatical errors". To stop them altogether, go to Tools Options Spelling & Grammar and uncheck both "Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar as you type". It might be better, though, to leave the lines enabled and pay attention to what they indicate. Word's spelling and grammar tools aren't perfect, but most people aren't perfect and can use their assistance. Words that are correctly spelled but not recognized (proper names, jargon, uncommon words) can be added to your custom dictionary. The grammar tool is less flexible and more often wrong. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org |

I first would try Help - Detect and Repair. If that doesn't fix the problem,
then the likely culprit is some kind of corruption (registry, template or document).
