Word 2003 takes a long time to open
When I first load up Word 2003 by double clicking an existing Word document
it always takes ages - over a minute. Subsequent file opening times are normal. It only happens when starting Word for the first time. It's as if the file I'm clicking cannot associate with the application porgramme. It's not virus checking because I have this option turned off in NAV 2005. This is a new PC running XP Home SP2 and I haven't messed around with anything. Any ideas??? |

If possible, turn on virus checking to rule this out as the problem.

Have now done this but makes no difference - Word still hangs on first
opening of a .doc. However, Word opens fine if I just open the application and don't open a file... "katin42" wrote: If possible, turn on virus checking to rule this out as the problem. If you have Intel, there's an update available for Intel Application
Accelerator; this hopefully might help, depending on system requirements. Consider updating your current Application Accelerator Driver, to rule out this possibility. Make sure system requirements are met, and that an update is actually necessary. This option might be available through the computer manufacturer, pending warranties, etc. About the viral scan, it's good to check. Consider scanning for spyware and parasites, as well. Viral Scans do not pick up on them. Check your Firewall settings, and make sure nothing is altered. There was also mention of NAV being turned off for the sake of functionality. This could be another part of the problem. You should be able to proceed with applications, without having to leave the system vulnerable. Check their site for troubleshooting, so that you might keep it running. Maybe it's time to consider changing brands. Not faulting the product, but if it's incompatable, another might be better. This is optional. Make sure you have valid and signed Active X files only. Anit-spyware or parasite prevention and removal, might require purchasing third party software. If possible, it would be more feasible, to purchase through your current Anti-viral and Firewall provider. Software compatability is a serious and necessary consideration, to avoid creating new problems. There's one parasite out there (can't mention the name), that downloads into your Registry and starts overwritting files every where, until it slows the system down. There are so many, that it is impossible to manually remove them. Still others might have different options to offer, but it's a start. This is not one to overlook, because it might spread to other areas. "Old Gustav" wrote: Have now done this but makes no difference - Word still hangs on first opening of a .doc. Thank you for your help. I will give all your suggestions a try - though I
think it is something more straightforward because I have anti-spyware, firewall, regular Windows and Sony updates etc. Many thanks. Not sure what part of NAV 2005 you turned off, but you should
turn off the NAV Office Plug-in as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in". If the previous suggestion doesn't help, then work through the troubleshooting steps in http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm . If the previous suggestions don't help, then try re-registering Word as described in http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm .
