Yes. The footnote reference -- in the body of the document -- is formatted
using the Footnote Reference style (by default, underlying paragraph style +superscript). The footnote text uses the Footnote Text style (by default, normal +8pt) You can re-define these styles same as any other styles. "diablo" wrote in message ... But you can't define the number in the text to be different from the number
in the footnote, because they both use the same style, Footnote Reference. One possibility--after creating the footnotes, do a Find & Replace that finds everything in Footnote Reference style and applies your desired formatting to it. Try this on a copy--but if you put the cursor in the footnotes before beginning the Find and Replace, it should just search the notes and then stop without going on to the main text. Different font sounds like it will look *really* weird, though. But you can't define the number in the text to be different from the number in the footnote, because they both use the same style, Footnote Reference. They are inserted that way, but there's nothing to stop you applying a different character style to one or other. Other than the tedium of doing it. Simplest would be to format Footnote Reference as you want it in the footnote itself, then do a F&R to replace that style with another in the body. |

You CAN redefine the text in the Footnote Reference Number to be different
than the text in the Footnote Text as follows: Insert a footnote into a document. On the menu bar click Format, Reveal Formatting and the Reveal Formatting box will appear to the right of your document. Highlight the Footnote Reference Number in the document text. €śCharacter Style: Footnote Reference Number€ť will appear in the Reveal Formatting box to the right of your document. Double click on €śCharacter Style€ť and the Style dialog box will open with Footnote Reference already selected. Next click on Modify, Format, Font and in the Font dialog box select the Font, Font Style, Size you want and under Effects click Superscript. Then click Okay to close the Font dialog box; in the lower left corner of the Modify Style dialog box check the box that is next to €śAdd to template.€ť Then click Okay to close the Modify Style dialog box; click Apply in the Style dialog box and Close. This will permanently change the Footnote Reference Number in this and every new document you create. Hey Jan Byrd--this is the third time you've given the wrong answer to the
same problem. Modifying the Footnote Reference style does *not* solve anything. The problem is that Word uses the Footnote Reference style to format the number in *both* the main text and in the note. So people who want the number in the text to look different from the number in the note run into a problem, cause the default setting uses the same style. Redefining the style is just going to change the number in both text and note, not solving the problem. Why don't you read the other answers on these threads for better solutions?
