Default How do you insert picture place holders in Word?

Hi All,

I want to insert an empty picture place holder in a word document, for later
inserting when finalising.

Basically I create reports that are often 100 pages in length,, I then have
to insert graphics, flow charts, images etc, each of these are often 500kb
so including them in the reports as I go only slows down the computer,
especially as the report is kept on a network file system. Even working on a
local version (stored on my hard disk is quite slow).

As a result I want to put in picture place holders much in the same way as
can be used in Powerpoint, so I can space out the documents correctly and
then insert the images etc at the very end.

Using a text box, autoshape etc doesn't seem to work as it resizes
automatically to the image size. Whereas I want to fix the picture "frame"
size so when I bring in the graphic/image/flowchart etc it fits the frame I
have created for it thereby eliminating the need to mess around with
formatting.

I am sure you used to be able to do this in Word for Windows (3.11) but it
seems to have disappeared in later versions. I am using Word for Office XP.

Thumbs up Answer: How do you insert picture place holders in Word?

Yes, you can definitely insert picture placeholders in Word. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Open your Word document and go to the page where you want to insert the picture placeholder.
  2. Click on the "Insert" tab in the top menu bar.
  3. Click on the "Picture" button in the "Illustrations" section.
  4. In the "Insert Picture" dialog box, select "Clip Art" from the "Search In" drop-down menu.
  5. In the "Clip Art" search box, type "picture placeholder" and press Enter.
  6. Select the placeholder image you want to use and click on the "Insert" button.
  7. The placeholder image will be inserted into your document. You can resize it to the desired size by clicking and dragging the corners of the image.
  8. Right-click on the placeholder image and select "Format Picture" from the drop-down menu.
  9. In the "Format Picture" dialog box, go to the "Size" tab.
  10. In the "Size" tab, make sure that the "Lock aspect ratio" checkbox is selected. This will ensure that the picture frame size remains fixed.
  11. Click on the "OK" button to close the "Format Picture" dialog box.
  12. You can now move the placeholder image to the desired location in your document.
  13. When you are ready to insert the actual image, simply right-click on the placeholder image and select "Change Picture" from the drop-down menu.
  14. In the "Insert Picture" dialog box, select the image you want to insert and click on the "Insert" button.
  15. The actual image will be inserted into the picture frame, and you can resize it as necessary.

That's it! You can now use picture placeholders in your Word document to make it easier to insert images later on.

Insert a one row, one column table with the desired cell dimensions at the
location where you want the pictures to appear.

In addition to Doug's remark, insert yr pictures straight away. In
Tools/Options/ [View tab] check "Picture Placeholders". This has the
effect that the pictures are not loaded in memory so your document is
quick to navigate. In case you need a quick peek, at least u hv
everything in place which whould help you to maintain overview.

Default How do you insert picture place holders in Word?

Thanks Doug,

I tried this and though it spaces things out well enough I still have the
problem of the image resizing the table if I insert it into the table or if I
delete the table and insert the picture it defaults to maximum size (out to
the margins).

Kind Rgds

Default How do you insert picture place holders in Word?

Hi Henk57,

Thank you for your response.

I tried your method as well.
Unfortunately I found that the picture could only be sized by the click and
drag boxes and that the format picture option (right click) was greyed out.
Therefore this also does not quite address the issue of defing the space
where you want the picture to go and then inserting the picture to fit that
space, rather than having to mess around and resize.

Dougs suggestion may work if I can work out how to fix the table size so it
does not resize and the image fits the table.

Thanks again for your suggestion will keep it in mind for future reference
and where picture size can be to page width.

Kind Regards
Michael

Hi Again Doug,

I have now found the "Automatically Resize To Fit Contents" check box under
Table Properties -- Table -- Options
( I should have seen it before )

So it looks like your reply is the winner for now.

Thanks again much appreciated

Kind Regards
Michael
..

Thanks so much
