Default AutoFormat

How can I permanently change settings in AutoFormat and AutoEdit? I go under
Tools/Options and uncheck the little boxes, click okay, and life is good for
a few days until Word decides that it would like to recheck the boxes. This
seems to happen when I'm in the middle of a document and all of a sudden
overtype mode takes over.
