Default Copyrighted [e.g., shop-bought] DVDs no longer play, virus relate

Norton Internet Security 2006 does not identify any viruses or spyware.
Mainly using Word 2003, trying to establish if infection really is a virus &
if so where it came from [e.g., Word document]. Blocking copyright-protected
[e.g., shop bought DVDs] looks virus-type [opening door to unlimited criminal
damages against author & distributor] but may be bug within Windows Update.
