Default Apostrophes vs. = symbols

Has anyone ever had a problem with a Word document where an "=" symbol
appears instead of an apostrophe (')?

Possibly you are using the US keyboard layout instead of UK or vice versa?

Alternatively, if you're seeing this not on creation but in an existing
file, there's a good chance it was converted from WordPerfect and the quotes
were inserted using the WP Typographic Symbols font, which is not installed
on the current PC. In such cases there's no recourse but to replace the
incorrect characters.
