Default Word has ceased recognizing "save as" instead displays a folder!

Can't save my new documents! How do I fix this problem? I am using Office XP.

G'Day John,

...displays a folder!

I don't know what this means - I cannot 'see' YOUR screen.

Does Word:
-somehow fire up Windows Explorer?
-somehow open My Computer?
-display a dialog box?
-if so, what title does the dialog display?
