Default How to omit endnote number/symbol?

Instead of keying my endnotes, I want to have no number or symbol in
the body of my manuscript, and then simply have the page number
accompany the endnote in the back of the book. So, there's no symbol
or number referencing the endnote. If the reader suspects there's a
citation or more info, they simply note the page number and flip to
the endnotes, which would look like this:

ENDNOTES:

p. 3. Blah blah blah...
p. 5. Blah blah blah...
p. 14. Blah blah blah...

Can Word do this or do I need a third-party app?

Thanks,
Rich

Word doesn't have a "no reference mark" option for endnotes (or footnotes,
for that matter). You could accomplish this, however, by using a bookmark on
the page where the "citation" is needed, and then including a page number
reference to that bookmark in your endnotes, for the page number. Page
numbers would update automatically if the document expands or contracts, but
you would have to build the list of end notes manually.

Alternatively... you could change the formatting of the Endnote Reference
style to Hidden. This then lets you control when/if the reference marks are
displayed or printed. This would at least build the list of notes
automatically. You would still need to manually insert the page number
references using a pagerref field at the beginning of each note. (in Word
2003, Insert - Reference - Cross Reference - type Endnote, to Page number).

Thanks. The second option of changing the reference mark format to
"Hidden" and manually inserting the page number into the endnote
sounds like it would work for me. I'm running Word 2003 but don't see
an option for hiding the reference mark. Can you point it out to me?

Also, when I go to the endnote and Insert - Reference - Cross
Reference - type Endnote, to Page number, it inserts the page number
to the footnote, not the reference mark, which is what I'd need.

Thanks,
Rich

Hidden is a font/text formatting attribute. The best way to accomplish that
would be to modify the Endnote Reference style's Font formatting. At the
lower left corner of the Modify Style dialog, choose Format - Font. Hidden
is included in the Effects section.

page number of the endnote/footnote itself instead of the page
containing the reference

Well, jeez. That's pretty useless--especially with endnotes--since endnotes
all occur on the same page, and there isn't an option to obtain the number
you actually want. When I tested this before posting, I was using a 1-page
document, so I didn't notice that.

There is a workaround, but it's not great. You would need to insert a
bookmark where the reference occurs, then refer to that bookmark's
location/page number in the cross-reference to get the page number in the
endnote list.

This isn't much more ergonomic than the other solution, except that this
method does automatically create the list of endnotes for you.

This could be automated using a macro, but it would take a bit of work to
make it work just right. Depending on how often you need to do this... you
might start looking into 3rd party solutions, assuming this is a wheel that
someone else has already invented.
