Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
I have a 3 column table 12 pages long; I want to show more entries of the
table on a page, but the 'column' cmd will not work. Incidentally, the word 'column' is used 2 ways in the application: a) 'column's in a table b) 'column's per page I want the table to appear in more than 1 column on the 'page'. Thanks. |

I think you're confusing two features: tables, and [snaking/newspaper]
columns. I want to know how to 'snake' a multi-page table into columns on fewer numbers of pages. Karl "Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote: I think you're confusing two features: tables, and [snaking/newspaper] columns. Put the cursor in the first cell then format columns two columns. The
table should shrink and reflow into two columns. 1. where is 'format'?
2. I have been able to snake tables in the past without being unable to read the content. Each row has a 3 columns: first column of 2 characters, second column has 1 character, and the third column has 11 characters. Should be able to snake this into at least 3 'snakes' per page. Thanks. Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
Privately:
(I do not know why it is so difficult to explain what I need. I am well aware of the columns tab within the page layout tab. I have used it before to snake tables. I have described the table I am trying to snake now. The column cmd within the page layout does not work for the table I described in the previous post. I want to know why. Microsoft should publish details about the various cmds to illustrate in detail when they work and when do not). Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
I have no idea why, and Microsoft probably won't either - though I don't
speak for them. I have created a three column table twelve pages long and it works as I describe. Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
Thanks. This was quite a bit more helpful. You mention anomalies, which I can
grasp, like the sunspots we used to blame for glitches a long time ago. Definitely the table contains fixed width cells, but I do not understand what difference this would make, as it has not made a difference in the past for other tables I have 'snake-columnized'. Incidentally, I also tried converting the table to text before 'snake-columnizing' it, but this then lost or hid parts of the table for me and still did not 'snake-columnize' it. Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
I feel like I have been dropped like a hot potato; your last answer '...I
have no idea ... and Microsoft probably doesn't either ....'. You could have said something like: 'how is this table, which you cannot columnize, differ from the one that you could columnize?' I had to hunt for the answer myself, and finally found that the length of the row was 6.5, even though the total of all 3 columns was less than 2. The increased length came about as I was expanding and contracting the table width to find the smallest possible width. The 'table definition' retained the largest size attained. The solution was to save the table in the clipboard, create an empty 'one column, multiple row' table, with the column size to expand as needed, then to copy the clipboard enty to the new table. Now tell me why I should not gloat that the expert would not/could not help me and I had to find the answer by myself? "Karl" wrote: Thanks. This was quite a bit more helpful. Table, page layout tab, 'columns' cmd
It seems you've found your answer, but my suggestion would have been to
check the width of the table. It's usually helpful to insert the table after creating the snaking columns, since any new table is inserted at 100% of the column width. For an existing table, you can make sure that auto resizing is disabled, then set the table width to 100% (to ensure that it is all visible) as a starting point for adjusting the column widths. -- Suzanne S.
