I would like to add Word document field codes such that selecting menu
Insert==Field would allow me to add a specific code that I can embed and
update at will.
An alternative to that would be to use the File==Properties==Custom tab to
create a custom property and add it to the Categories and Field names lists
in the Insert-Fields dialog.

E.g. Create a "Release date" property or field code which may default to the
day's date and remains unless specifically updated.... for embedding in the
revision history of a new document.

You can create a custom field in the Properties of any document or template
and insert the contents of the field using the appropriate DocProperty
field.
