Default Cannot delete created quickstyles from Word 2007

I train Word 2003 and 2007 so I'm very fluent with the features. Now that we
have migrated to Word 2007, I had a user contact me this morning with a
question that I could not answer. This user created a new quickstyle in Word
2007. The user also set it to be there when you open new documents (so it
was saved to the template). And it worked as expected, showing up on new
documents when you open one.

Here's the rub - the user decided he wanted to remove this style from the
default template so it didn't show up in new documents. I did everything
under the sun and couldn't do this. Yes, I went into the manage styles
dialog box and deleted it from there and I chose "Apply to New documents".
And yet, every time I do this, it still shows up.

The only way for me to get rid of it, was to delete the normal.dotx file and
let it rebuild it. Obviously, though, that is not a very workable solution.
It's like when you add a quickstyle it reaches out and puts into the
normal.dotx file (or whatever the particular template is). And yet, when you
try to take it out, it is a no go.

I would invite any of you to try this and see if you get the same results.
Any help any of you can provide, I would be most thankful for.

I also want to say thank you to all of the MVP's on this board, you have
saved my bacon too many times to count. I hope you are getting lots of money
from MS.

Thank you,
Alex Zimmerhaven

You should be able to delete styles in Word 2007 just as you can in previous
versions. I can create a new style and delete it without issue.

I wonder if the changes made to the Normal template aren't being saved. Take
a look in Word Options and the Add-ins (Office Button/Word Options/Add-ins)
and see if there is a PDF add-in from Adobe listed. If so it's known to
discard all changes to the Normal template.

If that's not it, what is the name of the style that was created? Could it
have been a built-in style name?

Also, since you are a trainer ;-), the term "Quick Style" refers to styles
that display in the Quick Style gallery on the Home tab, or more
specifically, those that have the "Add to Quick Style list" option selected
and "Quick Style" appears in the style definition. In addition to appearing
in the gallery, if you customize the set of Quick Styles that appear, by
either modifying the built-in styles or adding custom styles, they can be
saved as a Quick Style Set and used in other documents. So typically, unless
we're referring to the specific Quick Style attribute, styles are still
called "styles" in Word 2007. :-)

I believe I may have misspoke in my last reply. I *thought* the style was
deleted but after posting it came back for me as well. But also like
previous versions, since the style is stored in the Normal template the best
way to delete it is by using the Organizer. On the Developer tab, click
Document Template and then click Organizer. You should see the styles stored
in the Normal template in the dialog box. Select the custom style and then
click Delete. If you don't see the Developer tab, go to Word Options and in
the Popular group select, "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon."

I agree that this should be possible in the Manage Styles dialog box and
selecting the "New documents based on this template option" should apply to
deleting styles as well but it doesn't. I'll have to ask about this the next
chance I get. :-)

Oh yeah, MS doesn't pay the MVPs (we do this voluntarily) but that hey, I
think that's a great idea! Oh wait, we wouldn't be MVPs then, would we?
