Default automatic numbering of headings

I do remember in word 97, I did a little complicated settings in numbering
inside styles to assign automatic numbering for different level of heading.
In this case if I omit a heading or change its level, word automatically
changes the numbers.
I suppose this might be easier in Word 2000 without need for cpmlicated
settings.
If possible let me know how can I use automatic numbering for headings in
word 2000. TIA

I must admit I'm not quite sure what exactly the problem is you're
facing, but from a users POV, handling numbering through styles hasn't
changed much from Word 97 to Word 2000. [For me, it hasn't changed much
through Word 2003, but that's personal preference :-)].
