Default TOC Misbehaving

Hi all,

I cannot get the table of contents on this document to act right. When ever I edit the TOC, it screws up. If I take the contents of the document and paste into a new document, it clears up the TOC. However, if I update the TOC, it screws up the formatting again. The Document is attached. Can anyone help me find out why this is happening?

Thanks in advance.

Note: I had to delete several pages of the document and upload it as a zip file because it went over the limit.

Hi,

Why do you need to edit the TOC?
TOC means, that content/text will be imported from paragraphs in the main
document.
And the formatting will be applied by styles (TOC 1, TOC 2, ..., TOC 9).

Default TOC Misbehaving

Looking at your document, I see the following:

1 H
eading 1 text
1.1 H
eading 2 text

The explanation for the excessive amount of white space, which pushes the
heading text away, is that the auto numbers (1 and 1.1 in the example above)
insert a tab character before the text. The tab character moves the heading
text to the next tab stop that Word can find. To fix this, you have to
modify the TOC styles (which control the formatting of TOC entries). These
styles are set to update automatically, by default, so clicking on the
horizontal ruler and adding a tab stop will suffice. Drag the tab stop into
position. You will have to do this once for each heading level in the TOC.

The fact that you also get font formatting suggests that you need to
reformat your headings. Instead of adding font formatting directly to text,
modify the underlying styles. You can click in a heading (in the main body
of the document) and press Ctrl+Shift+S. In the Apply Styles dialog box,
specify the font you want. When you are done, click OK to exit. In the
document, select headings and press Ctrl+SpaceBar to remove direct font
formatting. Finally, update the TOC.
