Word Disables Font
I downloaded a Hebrew font from the internet. The font appears in the list of fonts in Word. When I select that font and start typing, the font automatically defaults to Times New Roman and types accordingly. I tried the same with an English font, and it worked fine. I tried a different Hebrew font and the same problem occurred. If I make a selection and change the style so that the font is this new Hebrew font, then the font comes up as it is supposed to. When I try to then type with the new style, Word defaults back to Times New Roman. Changing the Normal and Normalpara styles does not do anything. However, it should anyway be unnecessary to change the Normal style to get a font to work.
The Hebrew font works fine in Notepad. I have Windows 8.1 and Office 2007. What is happening is that for any new Hebrew font, MS Word does not let you type in the new font, but defaults to Times New Roman. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much! |

Have you installed the Hebrew IME in Windows?
I assume these are proper Unicode Hebrew fonts, and not fonts that simply use A-Z with Hebrew shapes. Thank you for your response.
These are fonts specially designed for the Hebrew. I believe that Hebrew does not require a dedicated IME, though I did install the Hebrew Language Pack. Quote:

"Hebrew Language Pack" is a term from long, long ago -- there's no such
thing any more in Windows 8.1. Before the invention of Unicode, Hebrew fonts had to be treated as if they were funny-looking roman alphabets, and you had to type backwards. But for the past 20 years or so, computers have been able to deal with the right-to-left scripts (Hebrew, Arabic, etc.) very naturally. You just have to tell your computer that you'll be using Hebrew (but I don't know how you do that in Windows 8.1). See: Language packs are no longer available... at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2910256 You may have to reinstall the language packs. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Michael Tardie |
