I wish to turn the first word of a paragraph into a side heading. There are
eight to do. Then sort the paragraph alphabetically from these side headings. |

Hello Suzanne. The main trouble is that the document already exists and I
can't figure out how to seperate the fist word of the paragraph out from the rest so they can be formatted (aligned) like this: Firstword: Rest of paragraph lined up below/beside. "Suzanne S. First, make sure you have the non-printing characters (¶) displayed so you
can determine 2 specific things: 1- Whether the colon ( is separated from the rest of the line by a Tab or a space, and 2- That each paragraph *is* a paragraph that wraps normally (not having used the Enter key to break the lines) If necessary, replace the space(s) after the colon mentioned in #1 & press Tab instead - and don't worry about the alignment/spacing as you do. Also, if there is one, replace the ¶ at the ends of the lines with a space - the ¶ should only appear at the very ends of each paragraph. Next (assuming the 8 paragraphs are consecutive) select them and place a Left Tab Stop at the appropriate point on the Ruler - probably based on the length of the longest "first word". Then drag the Hanging Indent Marker (lower triangle at the left end of the Ruler) to the same position as the Tab Stop. You may want to see the "Create a hanging indent" info on the following web page: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...d=CH0608302810 33 To sort, leave the paragraphs selected & go to Table Sort. You shouldn't have to change any of the settings, just click OK. That should give you what you need, but keep in mind that the formatting can also be accomplished using Styles. That would be preferable if you're familiar with them - If the paragraphs already have Styles applied you can modify the Style to include the Tab Stop & Hanging Indent.
