Weird gray brackets
These marks are indeed bookmarks. Bookmarks that gremlins in Word put there without your permission. Yes, disabling Bookmarks by unchecking them under Tools - Options - View works, but may be inconvenient if you have legitimate bookmarks in your document that you want to work with. Instead, go to Insert - Bookmark and DELETE the offending bookmarks.
